Kling vs Veo cost: what a usable clip really costs in 2026

Search pages for kling vs veo cost often quote a 10-second Veo clip. Veo 3.1 does not generate 10 seconds in one take on the Gemini / Vertex predict path. The honest comparison length is 8 seconds (Veo 3.1 default). Kling 3.0 can do 10 seconds. Both facts change the bill.

Prices checked on 2026-09-18 against the official Kling developer page and the Gemini API / Vertex AI pricing pages. Third-party numbers below are labeled as such and are not used as list prices.

Kling 3.0 API, 720p, native audio$1.26$3.78$6.30
Kling 3.0 API, 1080p, native audio$1.68$5.04$8.40

If a ranking page prices “10 seconds of Veo 3” at 10 × $0.40 = $4.00, that number is a duration the Veo 3.1 predict API does not accept. Check the model and the allowed lengths before you trust it.

How Kling pricing works

Kling sells two different meters. Mixing them is how “Kling is $X per video” pages disagree with each other.

1. Developer API: Units at $0.14 (this is the comparable meter)

Official page: kling.ai/dev/pricing. Also documented at kling.ai/document-api/pricing/base/video.

Verified on 2026-09-18 from that page (English copy):

Kling 3.0720p1080p4K
No native audio0.6 Units ($0.084/s)0.8 Units ($0.112/s)3.0 Units ($0.42/s)
Native audio0.9 Units ($0.126/s)1.2 Units ($0.168/s)3.0 Units ($0.42/s)

The official Kling 3.0 audio row is labeled With Native Audio x No Voice Control. 4K is a flat $0.42/s either way. Native audio is a separate rate row at 720p and 1080p (about +50%), not a multiplier you apply after the fact.

Kling 3.0 Turbo on the same page (native audio listed): 0.8 Units ($0.112/s) at 720p, 1.0 Unit ($0.14/s) at 1080p, 4K not listed.

Worked 8-second clip, Kling 3.0, 720p, native audio

0.9 Units/s × 8 s = 7.2 Units
7.2 × $0.14 = $1.008

Expiry (official, on the same pricing page): unused resource-package balance does not carry over and is cleared on expiration. Failed video generations do not deduct Units. Buying more packages does not raise the concurrent-generation cap.

A consumer Kling membership does not fund the developer API key. If you paste an official Kling key with no API resource pack, create fails with an insufficient-balance error. That is a different product from the website plan.

API pack SKUs (trial dollars, 5,000-Unit production packs, 180-day windows) were not printed as a public price table on the HTML fetched 2026-09-18. Re-check pack SKUs on kling.ai/dev/pricing. Do not use a remembered “$700” figure until it is on that page.

Kling 3.0 duration used here: lotgen’s Kling adapter treats 3 to 15 seconds as the billable range (tested 2026-08-25). That is lotgen’s own measurement, not a Kling marketing claim. Re-check allowed lengths on Kling’s video API docs if you need a Kling-official min/max.

For developers.

If you already hold a Kling API key and want the same prompt quoted in dollars next to Veo before it runs, request an invitation. Seat detail is on pricing.

2. Consumer app: membership credits (not converted here)

The website membership is a credit balance with expiry, weekly or monthly grants, and top-ups. Official copy confirms credits expire (bill-type-expire / “Credits will expire soon”) and that plan credits are not transferable the way purchased credits sometimes are.

Not verified on 2026-09-18 without a logged-in membership page: Standard / Pro / Premier dollar prices, credits per plan, and credits per second of Kling 3.0 in the app. Those numbers change with promos (“Plans from $2.99” is marketing copy, not a list price). If you only have an app plan, convert using Kling’s in-app credit table that day, not the API Unit table above.

Aside: this page uses the API meter on purpose.

The Unit table is public, dated, and comparable to Veo’s per-second API. The credit-to-dollar walkthrough is its own page: Kling AI pricing explained.

Kling via a gateway (fal), not a third list price

fal’s Kling Video v3 Standard on 2026-09-18 published $0.084/s audio off, $0.126/s audio on at the Standard row, which matches Kling’s own 720p 3.0 rates. Voice control on fal is a third row ($0.154/s). Matching 720p does not mean every gateway matches 1080p or 4K. Always read the gateway row you will actually call. fal is not the official Kling list price.

Luma and Sora are models on fal or evolink, not keys you paste. They are out of scope for this Kling-vs-Veo bill.

How Veo pricing works

Official Gemini API page: ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/pricing (page Last-Modified: 2026-09-16, fetched 2026-09-18). Official Vertex page: cloud.google.com/gemini-enterprise-agent-platform/generative-ai/pricing (redirects from the older Vertex generative-ai pricing URL).

Gemini API (the path a Google Gemini key uses)

Veo 3.1 models listed: veo-3.1-generate-preview, veo-3.1-fast-generate-preview, veo-3.1-lite-generate-preview. Paid tier, per second in USD, “video with audio price (default)”:

Tier720p1080p4K
Standard$0.40$0.40$0.60
Fast$0.10$0.12$0.30
Lite$0.05$0.08not supported

Google’s note on that page: you are charged only if the video is successfully generated.

Gemini API does not list a silent Veo 3.1 rate. Audio is the default. lotgen’s Veo adapter treats audio as not optional on 3.1 (generateAudio is refused; published rates are the with-audio row).

Vertex AI (same family, a second official table)

Vertex publishes two rows per tier: Video + Audio, and Video (no audio), priced as “$X / 1 count”. The with-audio numbers match Gemini’s per-second table. The silent numbers are lower:

Veo 3.1 on Vertex (2026-09-18)720p silent1080p silent720p/1080p with audio
Standard$0.20$0.20$0.40
Fast$0.08$0.10$0.10 / $0.12
Lite$0.03$0.05$0.05 / $0.08

If one blog says Veo is $0.20/s and another says $0.40/s, they may both be quoting Google, one silent on Vertex and one with audio on Gemini. That is not a reseller typo. It is two official rows.

Length (this is the 10-second trap)

Vertex’s Veo 3 predict parameters (fetched 2026-09-18): Veo 3 models accept 4, 6, or 8 seconds. Default 8. Veo 2 is 5 to 8, default 8.

lotgen probed the live Gemini Veo 3.1 API: 4, 6, and 8 are accepted; 5, 7, and 9 are refused even though the error text says “between 4 and 8, inclusive.” A page that bills “5 seconds of Veo 3.1” is pricing a length the API will reject.

A different Google video model, Gemini Omni Flash, has a documented duration string of 3s to 10s on the Vertex interactions path. That is not Veo 3.1. Do not copy Omni lengths onto a Veo cost table.

Veo via fal (reseller, for the SERP conflict only)

fal.ai/models/fal-ai/veo3.1 on 2026-09-18:

Use fal here only to show that ranking pages can be internally consistent with a reseller and still disagree with Google’s Fast row. Do not treat fal as the official Veo price.

Why “cost per second” is the wrong number

List price per second is the sticker. The number that hits the card is:

usable-shot cost = (list $/s × billed seconds × audio/resolution row) × attempts

Three things move that number more than the sticker:

  1. Attempts. A rejected motion, a bad hand, a missed product label: you pay for the miss and the keep. This page models 3× and 5×. Change the multiplier to your own keep rate. No published “industry retry rate” is cited here because the public pages checked for this page do not give one.
  2. The length the API will actually bill. Ask Veo 3.1 for 10 seconds and you do not get a 10-second invoice. You get a refusal, then you generate 8 seconds (or two clips). Ask Kling for 2 seconds and a 3-second floor (if still in force) bills 3.
  3. Expiry and prepaid packs. Kling API Units that you do not use still disappear when the pack expires. A cheap per-second rate with a forced prepay can cost more than a dearer pay-per-second API if you do not burn the pack.

Same prompt, same resolution, same audio flag, same billed length: that is the only fair Kling vs Veo line. Everything else is a different product.

Same prompt, both providers: the quote before you spend

Not a live invoice. This page has no side-by-side render and no screenshot of a paid take. The figures below are computed from the official list prices dated 2026-09-18, which is what a quote-before-spend UI should show for this configuration.

Prompt (illustrative): a 16:9 product hero, 720p, native audio on, one take, then the same prompt again on the other provider.

Provider / modelLength billedListQuote for 1 takeQuote if you keep the 3rd take
Kling 3.0 official API8 s$0.126/s$1.01$3.02
Veo 3.1 Standard, Gemini8 s$0.40/s$3.20$9.60
Veo 3.1 Fast, Gemini, 720p8 s$0.10/s$0.80$2.40
Veo 3.1 Lite, Gemini, 720p8 s$0.05/s$0.40$1.20

Standard Veo is about 3.2× Kling 3.0 at this 720p-with-audio row ($3.20 vs $1.01). Fast Veo 720p is cheaper than Kling 3.0 with audio ($0.80 vs $1.01). Lite is cheaper still and is a different quality tier. “Which is cheaper” is the tier, not the brand.

On lotgen.ai the same configuration is meant to appear as a dollar quote before the job runs, on your own keys, across the platforms the product actually keys: Google, BytePlus ARK, fal, evolink, Kling, OpenAI, MiniMax, Black Forest Labs, Alibaba, ElevenLabs, xAI and Runway. Luma and Sora stay models on fal/evolink. BytePlus ARK is the console that issues the Seedance key, and the name to put on the invoice.

Which is cheaper for your case

Assumptions for the three sketches: 8-second clips, official 2026-09-18 rows, 3 attempts per kept shot unless noted. These are budget sketches, not invoices.

1. Ad variant testing (many prompts, keep-rate matters)

You need 20 kept shots this week.

Stack1 kept shot (3 attempts)20 kept shots
Veo 3.1 Lite 720p$1.20$24
Veo 3.1 Fast 720p$2.40$48
Kling 3.0 720p with audio$3.02$60
Veo 3.1 Standard$9.60$192

If the test is “did the product read” more than “did it look like a film,” Lite or Fast is the cheaper official Google row. If you already pay for Kling Units and will lose them at pack expiry, burn Kling on the volume tests first.

2. Client spec work (1080p, audio, fewer throws)

One hero for a client, 1080p, audio on, you budget 3 takes and deliver one.

Stack3 takes
Kling 3.0 1080p native audio$4.03
Veo 3.1 Fast 1080p$2.88
Veo 3.1 Standard 1080p$9.60

Fast is the cheaper official 1080p-with-audio row. Standard is the row people mean when they say “Veo is $0.40 a second.” If the client contracted “Veo 3.1” without a tier, get the tier in writing. The gap between Fast and Standard at 8 seconds is $0.96 vs $3.20 per take, $2.88 vs $9.60 at 3 takes.

3. Solo creator iteration (you will throw most of it away)

50 exploratory takes, 720p, you keep a handful.

Stack50 takes (1×, no retry model)
Veo 3.1 Lite 720p$20
Veo 3.1 Fast 720p$40
Kling 3.0 720p silent$34
Kling 3.0 720p audio$50
Veo 3.1 Standard$160

If you iterate silent and add audio later, Kling’s silent 720p row ($0.084/s) and Vertex’s silent Standard row ($0.20/s) are the comparable pair, not Gemini’s $0.40/s default. If you iterate with audio because that is what you ship, use the with-audio rows or you will under-budget by 2× on Vertex Standard.

Prices checked on 2026-09-18: how to re-check yourself

Refresh this page monthly, and within a few days of a Kling or Veo model bump.

  1. Kling Units and per-second rows: kling.ai/dev/pricing. Confirm 1 Unit = $0.14 for video, then read the Kling 3.0 720p/1080p/4K cells with and without native audio.
  2. Veo 3.1 Gemini per-second rows: Gemini API pricing, section “Veo 3.1”. Confirm Standard / Fast / Lite and 720p vs 1080p vs 4K.
  3. Veo silent vs audio, and Veo 3 lengths: Vertex / Gemini Enterprise generative AI pricing and the Veo generate-video docs (Veo 3: 4, 6, or 8 seconds).
  4. If you generate through fal, read that model’s page the same day. Do not paste fal Fast $0.15/s over Google Fast $0.10/$0.12.
  5. Recompute: $/s × billed seconds × attempts. If the billed seconds are not 4, 6, or 8 on Veo 3.1, stop and check the model id.

FAQ

Is Kling cheaper than Veo?

It depends on the Veo tier. At 720p with audio, an 8-second Kling 3.0 API clip is $1.01. Veo 3.1 Standard on the Gemini API is $3.20. Veo 3.1 Fast at 720p is $0.80, which is cheaper than that Kling row. Lite is cheaper still and is a different quality tier. Compare the same resolution, audio flag, and billed length.

Why does this page use 8 seconds instead of 10?

Veo 3.1 on the Vertex predict path accepts 4, 6, or 8 seconds (default 8). It does not accept 10 seconds in one take. Kling 3.0 can do 10 seconds. An 8-second row is the closest fair compare. A 10-second Kling row is in the article for people who actually need 10 seconds.

Why do other pages say Veo costs $0.20 per second?

Vertex publishes a silent row at $0.20/s for Veo 3.1 Standard (720p/1080p) and a with-audio row at $0.40/s. Gemini API lists the with-audio price as the default. Both are official Google numbers. A page that quotes $0.20 may be using the silent Vertex row. This page uses the Gemini with-audio default unless a silent row is labeled.

Does a Kling membership pay for the Kling API?

No. Kling sells two meters. The website membership is a credit balance. The developer API bills Units at $0.14 for video. A consumer membership does not fund an API key. If you paste an official Kling key with no API resource pack, create fails with an insufficient-balance error.

Are the 3-attempt and 5-attempt columns a measured retry rate?

No. They are a modeling assumption. Multiply the one-clip price by however many takes you actually run. This page does not cite a public industry retry rate or a lotgen.ai observed keep rate.

How do I re-check these prices?

Open Kling developer pricing and confirm 1 Unit = $0.14 for video, then read the Kling 3.0 cells. Open Gemini API pricing, section Veo 3.1. Open Vertex generative AI pricing for silent vs audio. Recompute $/s × billed seconds × attempts. If a Veo 3.1 length is not 4, 6, or 8, check the model id.
